It’s time to prepare your closet for fall/winter, and here are the pieces I find myself drawn to during the cold month. Think of it as a ‘capsule wardrobe’ base that you can then expand with trend pieces.
1) The wool coat
Just like Garance Doré, the clothing item I adore the most is the wool coat. Wool coats just make an outfit and look effortlessly cool when you wear them open and incredibly chic when you tie them up at the waist. I have a navy one from COS which I really like because I can wear it even when the temperature drops below 0. For me they need to have big lapels, have a double breasted closure (if possible), and be the right length so you can sit on a bench outside even when it’s cold.
2) The black booties
Whenever fall is around the corner, I just want to take out my black ankle booties out of the closet. I like when they are made of smooth leather with a pointy toe and a small heel. In fact, I have 3 pairs like this in my wardrobe and I alternate between these and funkier boots all season. What’s great is that they work both inside and outside, which makes them super versatile. I would suggest looking at Aldo because they have a great selection.
3) The chunky knit
I am always cold. Like always! Which is why you will never see me wearing short sleeves in f/w. A great essential for me is the chunky knit, preferably with a turtleneck like the one in the picture. If I look at the selection I have in my closet, I typically choose them in a variation of cream, oatmeal, beige, navy or black… original eh? And with chunky knits you can either go to the quality route, but this means spending more time looking after your clothes, or finding an alternative in the high street (H&M is a great place to look for one).
4) The light cashmere jumper
There is nothing more glorious than cashmere. You can wear it on its own, layer it for more comfort and just play with it! It’s the best piece to own in fall winter, but you have to take care of it and wash it properly. I have a black crew neck one from Everlane that I wear all the time it’s almost embarrassing.
5) The perfect black trousers
Trousers are both comfortable and elegant. You can dress them up or down for whatever the occasion, which is why you’ll be happy to have one in your collection. Think of it as the wide-legged culotte of the summer but with a more refined touch. In the photos I’m wearing this beautiful pair of straight-leg trousers with a chunky knit tucked in for an Phoebe Philo-inspired look.
6) The classic pair of blue mom jeans
Mom jeans are great all year long, but they look especially nice paired with booties or knits. Mine are the classic blue Levi’s ‘Wedgie’ with frayed hems. If like me you wear mostly neutral colours, these will almost count as a pop of colour. Topshop have a model called the ‘straight leg raw hem’ which are very similar and they come in a variety of colours. Bonus point if you can get a pair with a button up closure, it is life changing.
7) The crossbody bag
When I start wearing coats and heavier clothes, I don’t want to faff around with a tote or a complicated backpack, hence why the crossbody bag is the best option. Choose one that can resist the weather changes (i.e. rain, snow, cold, etc). The one I’m wearing in the pictures is from Aritzia’s own brand Auxiliary and I’ve had it for such a long time but I would recommend looking at places like Zara, The Stowe (a Montreal brand), ATP Atelier or Mansur Gavriel.
8) Superga sneakers
When you find the best pair of sneakers for you, buy a pair, stick with it, and wear it until it falls apart. For me, that is Superga. I think their sneakers are a lot more feminine than most pairs and they are just flattering for your feet. I would recommend getting a white pair for summer or to wear inside and a complementary colour (mine is navy) in their ‘Cotu classic’ model.
9) The leather jacket
The leather jacket is a timeless piece that will go with everything. It’s a great transitional piece that you can also wear inside to edge up your looks. Go real leather or faux. I found mine in the sale section at Urban Outfitters 4 years ago and still wear it multiple times a week. The only thing is if you are like me, into gold jewelry/gold hardware, it is very hard to find a leather jacket with gold hardware, but you can always mix metals.
10) The blanket scarf
This multi-purpose piece is ideal all year long when you’re traveling, if it’s always cold at your school or office and to complement any outfit during the cold months. Aritzia is the best place to find a good quality one other places like Zara also have really pretty models. Find one with colours that complement your actual wardrobe.
